Committees

Joining an AFP Charlotte committee is one of the best ways to get to know other members and make the most of your membership.  You will have the opportunity to give back to your profession, while gaining valuable experience you may not get in your current job. Joining an AFP committee makes a statement, that you are ready to lead and support the local philanthropic community. For many members, committee involvement becomes a pathway for future Board membership.

Below are a listing of AFP committees with the area of focus. If you are interested in getting involved, fill out this form with your areas of interest and a member of the local AFP board will contact you to help you get started!

Membership Committee: The Membership Committee will assist with member recruitment, retention, and new member welcome. Committee members will receive a list of lapsing/lapsed members to reach out to for renewal as well as new members to welcome monthly. All materials and templates will be provided. Committee members are encouraged to attend AFP programming/events and offer to accompany or meet up with new members to provide a warm welcome. We are seeking 5 committee members for 2024, and the committee will meet quarterly.

NC Philanthropy Conference Committee: The NC Philanthropy Conference Committee is a multi-chapter collaborative team that develops a one-day conference and related events bringing together fundraisers and nonprofit leaders from across the state for education and networking. The Conference Committee meets regularly in advance of the conference in late August, primarily virtually. Conference Committees include: Programming (recruiting and determining speakers), Marketing (driving attendance and developing materials), and Logistics (site coordination and technology). Committee work is primarily from January-September with the highest time commitment for most committees in August. The 2024 conference is Thursday, August 22 in Greensboro. In addition to committee volunteers, the conference welcomes event volunteers. For additional information on the conference committee and its subcommittees,

Programming Committee: The Programming Committee is responsible for collecting prospect speakers/topics for monthly meetings and determining which speakers/topics to present. Committee members take turns assisting at monthly meetings, such as welcoming meeting attendees, day of registration, and introducing speakers. Each Fall (August-October), committee members will plan the full calendar year of monthly meetings for the following year. The committee will have quarterly planning meetings to touch base and assess the educational needs of the membership. Commitment is to attend at least three planning meetings, sign up to help at monthly meetings when possible, and, year-round, collect ideas for program topics and speakers.

Scholarship Committee: The Scholarship Committee will work together to review and award or deny various scholarship opportunities quarterly. The Scholarship Chair will send redacted applications to Scholarship Committee after the quarterly application deadline for committee review. Committee members will vote via email and provide their vote to the Scholarship Chair by designated deadline. Scholarship Committee members will meet twice per year to assess scholarship application process and scholarship impact.

National Philanthropy Day Committee: The NPD committee will plan and execute AFP Charlotte's annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon and awards ceremony. Each year, AFP Charlotte honors individuals, groups, organizations and businesses, who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities and the world. AFP Charlotte has hosted the NPD Awards luncheon in November for more than 15 years. Over 500 of Charlotte's top business leaders, foundations, charities and individuals come together to celebrate the vibrant philanthropic community that has an impact on every corner of Charlotte. The committee will meet monthly throughout the year.
