MINDING THE GENERATION GAP - HOW SEASONED DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS ENGAGE WITH
YOUNG PROFESSIONALS JOINING THEIR FIRST BOARD?

We are so used to working with board members our age or older, but the biggest diversity trend in nonprofit board recruitment is age diversity.  We are welcoming "Millenials" (23 - 35) and those slightly older to our boards in increasing numbers, but find their experience, interests and expectations are very different. (To say nothing of their restlessness in long meetings and their impatience with the often slow pace of decision making in our organizations.)  Raised in the "fail fast and pivot" generation, they are eager to get on with business, try out new ideas, and regroup if the ideas don't work.  Our responsibility is to meet them where they are, learn from them, encourage them -- while also sharing with them the history, purpose and vision of the philanthropic sector and gain their understanding that we do things differently for a reason -- but we are not averse to change.Tall order?  Yes.  But well worth the effort. Kay Sprinkel Grace has worked with Millenials on boards and other volunteer committees and researched their enthusiasms and frustrations with our sector in focus groups.  Her insights will help you work with this extraordinary generation -- one that is predicted to be the most generous generation (time and money) since the Greatest Generation.

THIS PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ALL AFP MEMBERS WTIH 15+ YEARS EXPERIENCE.
