Successfully leading a non-profit organization has never been easy. In the last few years it has gotten even harder. The old tried and true methods of fundraising no longer produce the results they once did, donors are becoming more demanding, and the motivators for volunteers are shifting. What hasn't changed is the critical importance of staff and board embracing their roles, working together, and supporting each other in a committed partnership
The solution that many leaders employ to get ahead in this ultra-challenging new environment is to try to outwork the work. While this can be effective in the short run, eventually working harder hits diminishing returns and the payoff and resulting satisfaction evaporates. This leads to burnout and compassion fatigue which can permeate the entire organization.
As essential element to thriving in this new normal is a healthy and productive organizational culture that enables and supports new levels of collaboration, innovation, and accountability on the staff and on the board. Kerry Barr O'Connor, the Executive Director of Dress for Success Charlotte and a member of the Dress for Success Worldwide Board of Directors, and Tom Lane, founding partner of OneTeam Leadership, have been working together for close to a decade to create a healthy and productive culture all across Dress for Success. While the journey is never ending and unique for every organization, Dress for Success Charlotte has come a long way and is now an internationally recognized chapter that is leading the way.
