September Monthly Meeting:

Right Seat on the Bus: Board Revitalizations That Worked

We all work to have engaged and excited boards members who eagerly raise money for our organizations. Yet, we can find ourselves aching for a board term to end, dreading the next meeting, or wondering if any of the board members got your VERY important message because it's been a week without a response.  This is a great topic for Executive Directors and Board Members!

For the September AFP Charlotte meeting, our speakers will demonstrate ways they have addressed these, and other issues with their board members. With practical takeaways, you'll learn to see how you too can create volunteer leadership with the skills to put their passion into action.

Member Confession:  Rachel Ellis, Director of Development, Children's Theatre of Charlotte

As many people do, I chose fundraising as my career by accident. I worked on political campaigns and for elected officials for the first few years after graduating college--which is what I had always thought I would be doing--but quickly realized I didn't see myself working in the field long-term. Because I had fundraising responsibilities in my previous jobs, I decided to turn my job search toward development positions. I landed a job in annual giving at the University of Richmond and for the first time felt a sense of professional fulfillment because I was doing something that I loved.

I moved to Charlotte just over two years ago after working in development at both the University of Richmond and Emory University. I started working for Children's Theatre of Charlotte soon after and have enjoyed working for a smaller organization where I feel like I am making a larger impact. It's rewarding to see how my work helps fulfill the Theatre's mission each day.

Perhaps the biggest change in moving from a large university setting to a smaller organization was the size of the development team. Having come from a job where there were over 200 individuals working in advancement to a place where there are four staff member with development responsibilities, I felt I needed to find a way to meet others with similar professional interests. I joined AFP last year and have since completed the Mentoring Program, where I was able to connect with a wonderful mentor and meet others in the program. I have also joined the Membership Committee and look forward to becoming more involved with the chapter. I feel more connected to my profession, the non-profit sector, and the community as whole because of the relationships I've made through AFP.
