Member Spotlight: Megan Mitcham, Annual Giving Manager at Charlotte Ballet

"Being able to connect with people in my industry with a wide variety of experience and backgrounds is the most valuable benefit of AFP. Fundraising is not a traditionally mainstream career choice which makes it difficult to find others who understand what you do for a living--it's not like being a teacher or working at the bank. Having a network of colleagues who are available to give advice (or just listen) and comprehend what I'm saying is so refreshing."

Megan is a regular at AFP's monthly Annual Fund Affinity Group. "The subject matter is always fantastic and I learn something new at each meeting. It's always great to get a different perspective on a subject like annual fund, that when you tackle daily, you sometimes get lost in the details. I participate to get to meet my fellow annual funders and to hopefully provide some helpful feedback and get some in return."

Supporting Your Professional Development

Did you set some new professional development goals for 2017? Check out these two awesome membership benefits that can help you achieve more in 2017:

1)  The Mentoring Program is a great opportunity for both seasoned and newer development professionals. Apply as a "mentee" and be paired with another member who can offer guidance and wisdom to help with your specific needs. Apply as a "mentor" to share your insights, help strengthen our overall profession, and learn through another perspective. Applications for the 2017 program now being accepted through May. Find out more here or contact Karen Beach at kbeach@cmlibrary.org.

2)  Love to network and share ideas with those doing similar work? Affinity Group Meetings (free for AFP members!) are a great way to learn and share with others beyond traditional monthly meetings. You'll find an affinity group organized for Small Shops, Annual Fund, Major Giving, Planned Giving, and New Professionals. Find upcoming meeting dates at event registration or contact Jim Kelly (jkkelley@charlottediocese.org) for more information on each.

Scholarships: One of the Best
Member Benefits

AFP Charlotte is committed to investing in its members and offers several scholarships for professional development including the upcoming NC Philanthropy Conference this August in Durham and the pre-conference CFRE and Fundamentals in Fundraising Workshops.  The Scholarship deadline for is June 15.
Visit http://www.afpcharlotte.org/professional-development/scholarships/ for more information and to apply.

AFP's CFRE Review Course offers development professionals an opportunity to review the main components of a complete fundraising program. It is a two-day, 16 hours, intensive program the purpose of which is to provide an overview of skills techniques, and program components base on fundraising experience at the five-year level. The course was developed for intermediate-level fundraising professionals who want a quick and comprehensive overview of fundraising principles, at a step above the fundamental level. Its content is organized around the CFRE exam domains: Current and Prospective Donor Research, Securing the Gift, Relationship Building, Volunteer Involvement, Management, and Accountability. Participants engage in fundraising problem-solving with top-notch professionals and network with fundraising peers.

The AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course was developed with a foundation from the Essentials of Fundraising Program and the First Course in Fundraising. It is composed of seven modules that have been designed by experienced fundraising professionals to meet the real-world needs and challenges non-profit organizations face every day. This 16 hour course is meant to be taught in an active learning style and includes case studies and projects for groups and individuals, making the learning experience both substantive and enjoyable. The AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course offers a complete overview of the development function, featuring the most current information and techniques and will provide an overview of skills, techniques and program components for individuals with zero to four years of fundraising experience.

Upcoming Programs

May 18 | 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
CPCC Harris Campus
Leadership Gifts with Karla A. Williams, MA, ACFRE

The term "Major Gift" has long been used to describe a gift of a certain size. A new term, "Leadership Gift", is more descriptive of our largest donors' motivations than the gift level. Today's significant donors are motivated to give because they respect the organization's leadership and want to be leaders in their own right. Karla Williams will explore the complex motivations of today's newest donors, and discuss what causes donor-satisfaction. Discover how each generation & gender require a unique leadership approach. Register here.

June 22 | 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
CPCC Harris Campus
Amanda Pagliarini Howard and the Society Guide

Following the successful launch of the 2016-2017 Giving Book, The Society Guide embarked on a survey of the region's most likely donors to local non-profits to understand why they give, who and what they support and what causes them to stop giving. Join The Society Guide's founder Amanda Pagliarini Howard and two members of their Advisory Council as they breakdown the results of the survey, the implications for your organization and how to capitalize on this to grow your donor base. Register here.
