President's Letter

January can often be a time for planning. It may not be the start of a new fiscal year for everyone, but the turn of a New Year offers the opportunity (and hopefully the time) to think about and plan for the year ahead. As you embark on your planning, I encourage each of you to deepen your connection with AFP and let it serve as a resource in your professional journey. In November we shared some of the resources offered by AFP Global (found here). There are countless tips, tricks and tools at hand when you need a quick answer.

But AFP is more than just a set of helpful documents and guides. Our professional association validates the hard work and ethics guiding our work. It also provides an array of professional development and training opportunities. I'd like to highlight a few below.

International Conference (or as past attendees casually call it ICON). This year the conference will be hosted in Baltimore, MD, from Sunday, March 29 to Tuesday, March 31st. The conference presents a variety of keynote speakers, like Jose Andres (Internationally Recognized Culinary Innovator, Author, Educator, Television Personality, Humanitarian, and Chef/Owner of ThinkFoodGroup) and Zainab Salbi (Humanitarian, Bestselling Author and TV Host). There are also limitless options for breakout sessions led by innovative and best-practice professionals in our field.

It is important to note that the early bird pricing ends on January 31st. Sign up today if you plan to attend. A large group of AFP Charlotte members attend. It is a great time to get to know each other and network.

Our AFP Charlotte Chapter has a variety of opportunities to learn and grow together.
  • Attend a monthly program or join an affinity group. You are sure to find value in the content and expertise of presenters and colleagues.
  • Join the mentoring program, which launches in March. Participate by becoming a mentor or mentee.
  • Apply for one of the many scholarships offered by AFP Charlotte, which includes opportunities to attend ICON, seek reimbursement for CFRE certification or attending other courses offered by AFP.
  • Join an AFP Charlotte Committee and get more involved.  We have volunteer opportunities that range from assisting with National Philanthropy Day in November, to helping guide monthly programming and everything in between.
Your journey could start much like mine. I joined the Mentoring Program and quickly found my way onto the NC Philanthropy Conference Committee and then onto the AFP Charlotte Board. I promise you will get more out of your membership when you put more into it. If you aren't a member, consider joining! Non-members are welcome to attend monthly meetings, but many of our programs like affinity groups, scholarships and mentoring are reserved for AFP Charlotte Members.

Best of Luck in the New Year!

Mentoring Program

Do you have fundraising knowledge and coaching skills you'd like to share?  Are you just starting your career in development and need some guidance and support?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, it means you might be interested in becoming a mentor or mentee.
As a mentor, you'll be paying it forward by sharing your experience with someone who was once in your shoes. As a mentee, you'll receive the benefit of learning from someone who knows what you're experiencing. You'll have a coach and partner who can guide you to be a better fundraiser.

If interested in either, please contact Jane Weaver at jweaver@gmail.com or 401-714-8182.

And we're recruiting now for members to join the Mentoring Committee. Contact Jane Weaver if interested in joining this group. We'd love to have you!

Affinity Groups

Ask the Experts! Affinity Groups are AFP member only workshop sessions to connect with peers, network, and learn more about fundraising with peers in similar roles. It is the best place to ask the questions you have always wanted to ask. And the best part it is free to AFP members!

This year look forward to learning more about:

And coming soon webinars!!! To learn more or sign up for an Affinity Group, click here.

National Philanthropy Day 2020

Are you interested in expanding your network of non-profit peers? Are you looking for new ways to deepen your engagement with AFP Charlotte outside of our monthly programs? Are you interested in honing a plethora of skills ranging from event planning to sponsorship outreach? If so, then the National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Committee is interested in you!

AFP Charlotte's National Philanthropy Day luncheon on November 12 is an annual, high-profile event celebrating the spirit of giving in our community and is attended by over 700 community and non-profit leaders. If you're interested in being a part of the NPD Committee, then please contact Nick Stewart to learn more about this important and highly-visible volunteer leadership opportunity.
