Holiday Social

The mentee/mentor group held its annual fall breakfast program on November 13 at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus. Over 20 people were in attendance to learn more about key issues that affect every nonprofit professional. Current AFP Charlotte President Mike Blackwelder welcomed the group and encouraged all to utilize the tools available through their AFP membership.

We were honored to have Sarah Lanners from Arts+ present on "Internal Communication". From PMA, Penny Hawkins' presentation focused on useful professional resources and keys to successful time management. A spirited discussion followed each presentation.

We are currently recruiting for 2020 mentee/mentor committee members. If interested, please contact Committee Chair Jane Weaver at
jweaver@habitatcharlotte.org or 401-714-8182.

Benefits to Being an AFP Member

Fundraising Professionals tend to wear a lot of hats. Most days, I sit down at my desk with a plan in mind for what I plan to accomplish, but on many occasions, I find myself reacting to an opportunity or risk that I had not anticipated. I can pick up the phone and call a trusted colleague for advice or I can turn to Google and find limitless (unverified) feedback. Your quick need for advice and guidance can range from board governance to event management to nonprofit budgeting.

However, I encourage each of you to maximize your benefit with AFP Global by relying on their extensive library of tools and resources, which include:

  • Tools & Templates
  • Hot Topics
  • Reports & Research
  • Fundraising Dictionary
  • Fundraising Effectiveness Project
  • AFP 360 for Job Resources
  • Much More!

Today, I'd like to highlight the Tools & Templates and Hot Topics section of the AFP Global Website. The Tools & Templates section includes a myriad of resources that help you in your everyday job, without recreating the wheel each time. Perhaps you assist in leading the Development Committee of your Board of Directors and they are interested in doing a self-evaluation. AFP Global has a template you can use to help guide your work. Or maybe you need to create more rigor around prospect and donor meetings. AFP Global provides templates to collect and create meaningful evaluation for prospects and donors. The Tools & Templates section event includes sample job descriptions to assist in the hiring of new team members or perhaps in preparation for your annual review.

Equally meaningful to your everyday job is the
Hot Topics section. It is impossible to have an answer to every question you may be asked by leadership, board members and key volunteers. For example, a well-meaning board member might ask about the creation of a possible endowment for your non-profit. The Hot Topics section of the AFP Global Website provides a collection of feedback on that topic and dozens of others.

These resources, and many others, are available as a part of your AFP Membership. The AFP Global Website requires a username and password, which is included in your membership. I encourage you to bookmark the page and start using this verified and useful tool on a regular basis!

BE the CAUSE

'Tis the season... to remember to charitably support AFP.

The BE the CAUSE Campaign embodies the importance and impact of a profession that values ethical and effective fundraising in the world and works in the interest of the public good. The campaign demonstrates what fundraisers do and why we do it. Because education, training, mentoring, and research empower fundraisers.

Your gift is a strategic investment in your chapter and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy, supporting key initiatives such as diversity and inclusion, professional's education and leadership development, research and scholarships. A portion of your gift will also support the Charlotte Chapter of AFP.

Want to make a difference? Make your gift today and
BE the CAUSE.
