President's Letter

Happy Monday! If you are like me, you are preparing for a hectic week. Spring break is over; so, board members, donors, volunteers, staff and maybe even you are digging out after being out of the office and realizing that for many of us, we are in the last quarter of our fiscal year. Where did the time go?

While I know everyone is extremely busy, do not forget to prioritize your professional development. We have some great programs coming up. This Thursday, we have three different educational program offerings for our Morning Forum. Also, mark your calendar for Karla Williams teaching us about Leadership Gifts on May 18. As you read last week, we have LOWERED the pricing for our monthly programs for an additional member benefit.

We also have wonderful Affinity Groups each month. If you have not attended one in the past, please check them out here.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

Best regards,

President, AFP Charlotte

Leadership Gifts with Karla A. Williams, MA, ACFRE

The term "Major Gift" has long been used to describe a gift of a certain size.  A new term, "Leadership Gift", is more descriptive of our largest donors' motivations than the gift level.  Today's significant donors are motivated to give because they respect the organization's leadership and want to be leaders in their own right. Karla Williams will explore the complex motivations of today's newest donors, and discuss what causes donor-satisfaction. Discover how each generation & gender require a unique leadership approach. Register here.

I love that the AFP Charlotte chapter offers scholarships to our members. I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship towards a CFRE review course last year, and I am happy to report that I passed the exam in November! Phew!! The application is brief and the committee is diligent in their communication. Please take advantage of this fantastic member benefit! ~Deepa

The NC Philanthropy Conference and Pre-Conference CFRE and Fundamentals in Fundraising workshops are taking place this August in Durham.  Scholarships are available and the deadline is June 15
Visit http://www.afpcharlotte.org/professional-development/scholarships/ for more information and to apply.

Why Should I Get My CFRE?

Competence. Confirms your knowledge of fundraising best practices, accountability, and ethical conduct.
Credibility. Distinguishes you as a dedicated professional who keeps pace with the latest developments in fundraising.
Career Advancement. Makes you part of a global network with greater career opportunities and earning power.
Commitment. Is a public statement that you are personally dedicated to upholding the integrity of the fundraising profession.

Regardless of when you plan to earn your CFRE, the first (and easy) step is to start the process by creating your free account at www.cfre.org/apply/new-applicant/.

When you attend a morning or lunch program, we will provide you with a Continuing Education tracker to use towards earning or renewing CFRE status.  Also, AFP Charlotte has designated a limited amount of funds to support CFRE certification and recertification for its members.  Learn more by clicking here.

AFP Government Relations Update

1.  Trump Administration's 2018 Budget Blueprint
AFP released its official position on the budget blueprint on March 17. You can find the full statement here

2.  Tax Reform
With healthcare reform likely concluded for the foreseeable future, Congress is, according to most sources, now looking at tax reform. It's still unclear how the charitable deduction and other giving incentives might be affected. We will keep chapters updated.

3.  AFP Political Action Committee
The purpose of the Committee (PAC) is to provide the opportunity for individuals interested in the future of philanthropy and the profession of fundraising to contribute to the support of candidates for Federal office who believe, and have demonstrated their beliefs, in the principles to which philanthropy and the fundraising profession are dedicated. The PAC is non-partisan and dedicated to the protection and advancement of the fundraising profession and philanthropy in its various forms.

AFP encourages all U.S. members to contribute to the PAC. Information about giving to the PAC can be found on the AFP website
