2018 Programming

July 19, 2018
Talent Recruitment: Hiring and Retaining Staff
11:30 am - 1:00 pm | CPCC Harris Campus

The end of the fiscal year for many nonprofits is just around the corner on June 30 and with it comes the great "musical chairs" of development professionals chasing the greener grass of other organizations. This session will focus on how to curtail the cycle of turnover by finding and keeping the people you want and need on your team. Ken Carrick from Coleman Lew + Associates will share insights on best practices around acquisition, onboarding, and retaining talented staff. This session is topical for people at all levels-including Executive Directors and Board Members-whether you are looking for a new role or have an open position to fill. Register here.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2018
Mark your calendars!  Fundraising legend Adrian Sargeant will be here for a day of programming with AFP Charlotte. More information, along with registration options, is coming soon.

Listen. Learn. Lead!  The 2018 NC Philanthropy Conference is set for August 30th in Winston-Salem, NC. Join over 400 of your fundraising peers on nonprofit professionals for professional development and networking opportunities.

This year's conference will have an intentional focus on leadership, specifically: Young Leader Engagement, Emerging Philanthropy and Philanthropic Opportunities, Engaging Corporate Leadership, and Foundation Funders View of Leadership.

The opening keynote is Ella L.J. Edmonson Bell and the luncheon speaker is David Huffine. Listen and Learn from each other as we look to Lead for the future of our sector.

Every chapter member in good standing is eligible for consideration as a director or officer. A single slate of officers and directors for election will be presented to our chapter membership at the annual meeting in September. We hope you will consider serving the chapter in this meaningful way!

Member Spotlight: Sydney Hammond
Foundation Development Coordinator, Mecklenburg Bar Foundation

"Joining AFP instantly broadens a fundraising professional's access to research, best practices, and advice on the field of philanthropy. Taking advantage of all that AFP has to offer has given me much more wisdom than my 4.5 years in the field would have alone. I especially appreciate the AFP mentorship program, committee involvement, and the affinity groups. Getting together with smaller groups of fundraisers in a similar position to mine is invaluable for my professional growth and the relationships I've built through AFP mean a lot."

Sydney has been a member of AFP since 2014. She originally joined in Greenville, SC and later joined the Charlotte Chapter when she moved to the city in early 2016. Sydney has become an active member of the National Philanthropy Day committee.

"This is my second year on the NPD committee and it's been a great experience! The event is always impressive, and I've been amazed seeing it come together smoothly through the hard work and commitment of each committee member. I enjoy being part of the nomination process and reading about all of the amazing work in Charlotte's philanthropic community that I may have otherwise missed. The event is a great opportunity to get together for a couple hours and really honor the good work so many people are doing in our community. My fellow committee members make the experience fun in addition to being rewarding!"

Three Top Ways to Take Advantage of All Your AFP Membership Offers

Your AFP membership is just like anything else in life--you get out of it what you put in. Beyond the monthly meetings and affinity group meetings, here are the three top ways to put your membership to work that you might not have considered:

Bring a Friend.
Don't keep all the great knowledge and experience to yourself: engage your board members and other leaders by inviting them to an AFP event. One great opportunity coming up: at our lunch meeting on September 25th we'll have the foremost authority in the domain of nonprofit marketing and fundraising, Adrian Sargeant, as our speaker. Your board members and executive director will come away just as excited as you are to implement all the great ideas you'll hear.

Watch a FREE webinar.
As an AFP member you have access to AFP's professional advancement programs and courses. There's something for everyone, no matter your experience level. Check out the library of free webinars, or browse other resources at afpnet.org.

Show donors the love.
And finally, don't forget about one of our community's premier philanthropic events - AFP Charlotte's National Philanthropy Day luncheon on November 27. This event is the perfect opportunity to show your donors and volunteer leaders how much you value their support. Host a table at the luncheon and ensure that your key supporters get to know one another. Perhaps you invite everyone at the table to share why they care about the work of your nonprofit. They're guaranteed to leave feeling inspired and appreciated for the philanthropic gifts that they share with your organization and throughout our community.
