Accounting 101 for Non-Profit Non-Accountants

CFRE: This program aligns with Domain 5: Leadership and Management

Description: We're going back to school to learn the basics of Non-Profit financial statements. Exciting topics include "restricted vs. unrestricted", "Cash vs Accrual", "Budget vs Forecast".  What the heck are Functional Expenses? What should we do with this stock donation? Why don't the accountant's revenue numbers match the fundraising team's numbers? So many questions. Time to dive in. The great news is that there is no test at the end of this class!

BIO: Jim serves as the CFO at Ascend Nonprofit Solutions where they provide full serve accounting for 19 area nonprofit organizations.
He earned his accounting degree from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, and has been a CPA for over 30 years. He started his career working in a local accounting firm in Dallas before making a career detour into church ministry for kids-all the while doing bookkeeping and tax returns on the side. He joined Ascend in 2012 as a controller and became CFO in 2016. He was named the CBJ Nonprofit CFO of the Year in 2023. In his spare time, Jim and his wife Tara are active in their church, enjoy travel, and love experiencing new restaurants. Jim runs marathons (18 so far), likes crime novels, and prefers his coffee black.
