CREATING PRODUCTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR BOARD

"Boards that work, work."  This core idea is the biggest takeaway from Kay Sprinkel Grace's seminal work, "The Ultimate Board Member's Book" (Emerson & Church, 3rd edition 2009) and is the platform for our general session.  Working productively with your board is the most important single accomplishment for creating a culture of philanthropy and a successful donor development and fundraising program. Productive relationships begin with understanding basic requirements for board service and involvement, extends to learning what motivates the board member and culminates in matching that motivation with what is needed in your organization for it to move forward. It further requires that as organizations we understand the purpose of the board in order to evaluate performance.  Kay Sprinkel Grace will discuss her "AAA" (Ambassador, Advocate, Asker) program for board engagement, a proven program used by organizations across the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.  Her book, "The AAA Way to Fundraising Success" (Whit Press, 2009) will serve as the basis for a portion of the presentation. Participants will also be sent an article about board purpose and performance prior to the session.
