Gift acceptance policies are unique to each organization; they outline what gifts can and cannot be accepted; provide discipline in gift acceptance and administration; and educate board and staff about the complexities of accepting certain types of gifts. Unfortunately most organizations don't realize the need for a gift acceptance policy until they face a capital or endowment campaign, when this valuable policy should be used on an ongoing basis to provide guidance for staff, donors and their advisers on an ongoing basis.
