AFP Racial Equity Book Club - Open to Members and Guests!
AFP Charlotte will host the next Racial Equity Book Club on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 4:00 p.m.  In January the group will focus on the book Decolonizing Wealth: Indigenous Wisdom to Heal Divides and Restore Balance by Edgar Villanueva. If you'd like to read the book or you have already, please join us for a discussion on the important issues facing philanthropy and the wealth that funds it. Villanueva highlights our nation's history of oppression and racism and its deep impact on philanthropy. "Decolonizing Wealth offers an arrow to pierce the status quo. While the heart of the revolution for justice is not dependent on philanthropic support, there can be a powerfully effective role for mindful philanthropy to respectfully contribute to the reimagining and actualization of a more just world for future generations."

--Tia Oros Peters (Shiwi), Executive Director, Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples

The group will also review What if we Decolonized Charlotte, by Valaida Fullwood, which takes a look at the local philanthropic landscape in our own backyards.

Last Chance for an AFP Scholarship!

Have you attended AFP ICON?  If your answer is no - APPLY TODAY for the Chamberlain Scholarship!

AFP Charlotte, in partnership with AFP Global, is offering to send to one AFP Charlotte Chapter member to AFP ICON next year as the Chamberlain Scholar.  AFP ICON will be held in person and virtually on June 28-30, 2021 in Minneapolis, MN.

The AFP International Fundraising Conference brings more than 4,000 fundraising professionals together to discuss, teach, and learn about new development issues. It offers more than 100 educational sessions designed to serve the development needs of participants from entry level to highly experienced. The Conference exhibit hall features over 300 vendors.

If you have not attended AFP ICON and are interested, please click below to complete the application and review guidelines by December 20, 2020.

What is the Chamberlain Scholarship?
The Chamberlain Scholarship program honors Ralph E. Chamberlain, CFRE. Mr. Chamberlain had a long and distinguished career of service to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), beginning in the 1960s when the organization was formed as the National Society of Fund Raisers (NSFR), through the late 1970s when the name was changed to the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), and until his death in 1999. Mr. Chamberlain's dedication to the organization we now know as AFP never faltered in his long volunteer career with the Association. Because of his long-time support of the Foundation's annual fund and generous planned gift, the AFP Board of Directors renamed their Conference Scholar Program in 2000 to honor Mr. Chamberlain's memory and commitment to the Association.

Membership Spotlight: Heather Moeller, CFRE

Heather Moeller is the Regional Director of Philanthropy at the Children's Home Society of North Carolina. She has been a member with AFP for over 10 years! We asked Heather a few questions about her experience with AFP. We hope you enjoy!

What have you enjoyed most about being a member of AFP? AFP has introduced me to the most amazing people in Charlotte. Not only have I met incredible philanthropists and change-makers that are uplifting our city, but I have also gotten to know my peers who are tirelessly fighting for a better world. I am so proud to be affiliated with these warriors! Most importantly, AFP has changed my life because it introduced me to members who started out as colleagues and peers, but grew to be my dearest friends. They have made a tremendous influence in my life and made me a better person and professional.

Do you have a favorite AFP event or program you have attended that you think other members should take advantage of, should they have the opportunity? I received the Chamberlain scholarship (APPLY TODAY!) during the early stage of my career. It afforded me the opportunity to attend the AFP International Conference (AFP ICON).  It was an unforgettable experience and I encourage any new professional to apply for a scholarship. If I could afford it, I'd attend ICON every year.

What are the benefits of being a member of AFP that you find most beneficial or valuable? I believe the affinity groups are extremely valuable. They offer a chance to really get to know other members because they are set in small groups. Affinity groups are always free, so they are an excellent perk of membership. There are various themes, so everyone is bound to find one that meets their needs. If you haven't attended an affinity group meeting in a while, please make it your mission to join one in 2021. They are all virtual right now, so there's no excuse to miss one. I promise you will get a lot out of it.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being a member of AFP Charlotte?
Please feel free to reach out to any of the board members at any time for any reason. We are here to help every AFP member have a fulfilling experience.
IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access)

As fundraisers, we have a responsibility to interrogate perceptions of philanthropy and to rethink what philanthropy means for modern needs and equity.

This month, the IDEA committee is pleased to share resources to help you celebrate the upcoming holidays inclusively at your workplace:

Promoting Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) is a key pillar of AFP Global and AFP Charlotte's vision for the organization. For more information, or to join the IDEA committee, please contact Holly Whitfield, VP IDEA and Strategic Initiatives, at hwhitfield@shepherdscharlotte.org.

Thank you to the wonderful sponsors who supported this year's National Philanthropy Day a success. This year, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community gathered virtually to celebrate the path forward and honor 9 outstanding philanthropists, volunteers, organizations and non-profit professionals who are changing the world with a giving heart.
