Upcoming Community Forum

AFP Charlotte's IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access) Committee is a proud partner of the upcoming civic engagement forum, titled "JUST.  COMMUNITY. A Decolonizing Wealth Conversation with Edgar Villanueva." The event is being hosted by New Generation of African American Philanthropists, Bank of America, and YMCA of Greater Charlotte.
The forum will be held on June 27th at One Bank of America and will feature in-depth discussion with Villanueva around his new book, "Decolonizing Wealth." The book weaves a provocative analysis of the dysfunctional racial and colonial dynamics at play in philanthropy and finance.
Tickets are $35 and includes a copy of the book. Further details and ticket info can be found at, or by following this link.  We hope you will join us for this insightful discussion about philanthropy and racial equity.

Membership Spotlight

Mary Beth Wells
Manager of Major Gifts, Charlotte Rescue Mission

"I have always sought a career that fulfilled a higher purpose in my life. I believe in improving the quality of life for those impacted by the causes I serve, and those who support it. I also believe that there must be a high moral standard when this is your life goal-to help others live their best life through resource allocation and collaboration of community. AFP embodies this ideology and strives to continue to maintain this as a cultural standard in the fundraising community."

Mary Beth has been with AFP since February 2019. Although she is new to AFP, she has jumped right in to being part of the National Philanthropy Day committee. "It gives me the chance to be a philanthropist of sorts myself. I get to give back my talents to the community to help award and reward local Philanthropists in the Charlotte Community. I can promote the act of Philanthropy, encourage organizations to submit nominations, and hear amazing stories of how this philanthropic cycle is never ending. Most importantly, it restores my faith: in humanity, in love, and in grace."

Mary Beth has been a wonderful asset to the NPD committee and the AFP community. "Aeschylus, the Greek Playwright, coined the term Philanthropy with a meaning of "Love of Humanity".
Today we think of Philanthropy as the giving of gifts of time, talent, or value to help make others life's better. On National Philanthropy Day we recognize the importance of these endeavors. No act goes unnoticed, and some are even awarded by their peers. Regardless of how you define it-its people working together for the common good of others."
