President's Letter

Mmmm, pumpkin pie and apple cider. The autumn is no longer approaching - it's here! And AFP Charlotte has a lot going on.
This year, our chapter has partnered with SHARE Charlotte to collaborate on a campaign leading up to our National Philanthropy Day Luncheon, which is taking place on Giving Tuesday. Throughout November, you will find branded AFP Charlotte and SHARE Charlotte media celebrating #EverydayPhilanthropy - the opportunity for anyone to give back to their community. We ask that you help us amplify the campaign by liking and sharing the content as you see it. This is your AFP chapter spreading the joy of giving generously.
We hope to see you at our programs and events throughout the end of the year!

Navigating Negotiations: More Money & More Mission Webinar
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm | Catholic Diocese
Do you want to have more to do more? Join in and learn how to best navigate negotiations. Poor negotiation skills and a lack of confidence can cripple a charitable fundraiser's ability to obtain the necessary financial resources to fuel its organizational mission. These practical tips will help you secure larger major gifts, obtain more multi-year financial commitments and deliver more value. We will share evidence-based solutions that can assist in the creation of a win-win partnership with prospective and current donors.

In this session, you will learn how to:
  • create and introduce negotiation standards aligned with AFP Code of Ethical Standards.
  • frame and rank order organizational priorities to achieve better solicitation success.
  • establish criteria for counter offers and prepare solicitors to cope with discomfort.
  • achieve and celebrate donor-centered negotiation outcomes.

AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Scholarship Recipient Heidi Ferster

What an honor it was for me to receive the AFP Fundamentals Scholarship, allowing the opportunity to participate in the AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising course on August 28th through the 29th. My hope for this course was to strengthen my fundraising skills, resulting in the creation of more effective and successful fundraising programs. The course provided an extensive amount of information and tools to strengthen my knowledge and skills as a Development Officer. Click here to continue reading.

Commentary: The Impending Decline in Charitable Giving

Things are about to get difficult in the charitable world. As a direct result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018, charitable giving is expected to decrease by about five percent.

The new tax law enacted by Congress last fall effectively doubles the standard deduction, thereby dramatically reducing the number of taxpayers that will be able to itemize their deductions. It's projected that 21 million families will no longer be able to claim an income tax deduction for any gifts they make to charity. Continue reading the article here.
