As donors become increasingly focused on outcomes and assessments, and programming staff looks to development to increase funding for new programs, the delicate relationship between the aims of these two departments is more vital and success-defining than ever.

And yet, in more than one area nonprofit organization, refrains of "can't we all just get along?" can be heard following full-staff meetings.  How can organizations encourage open communication and shared decision-making that leads to a more positive organizational culture?

AFP Charlotte's four-part programmatic series with the theme of Philanthropy for the Whole Organization concludes on December 17 with a session focused on the sometimes difficult relationship between Programming and Development staff.

Presenters will include representatives from Community School of the Arts and Humane Society of Charlotte, who will discuss unique ways they have developed strong, healthy relationships between these two departments, and ways to ensure that everyone stays on the same page.

This session is ideal for pairs of development and programming staff members - so please consider bringing a guest to participate.  A Q&A session will follow the presentations.

NPD Lifetime Achievement Award: Michael Rose

AFP Charlotte celebrates Michael Rose's three decades of service to the nonprofit community.

After 27 years as President of Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, Michael Rose recently retired. He was one of the founders of the AFP Chapter in Charlotte and a national leader in the development of professional organizations for fundraisers. He was a pioneer in the development of the CFRE certification the highest standard that a development professional can achieve.

Carolinas HealthCare System, and many more organizations, honored him when it was announced that he established the Michael L. Rose Endowment For Excellence in Children's Healthcare. It annually supports the Excellence Award(s) to front-line nursing, therapy and child-life staff at Levine Children's Hospital. It provides the opportunity to pursue meaningful and
continuing education opportunities.

Michael has engaged community leaders including: the Levine Children's Hospital's Administrative Team, Margaret & Smoky Bissell, The Dickson Foundation, the Tansukh Ganatra Family, the Heineman Foundation of Charlotte, Linda and Rick Hendrick, Sandra and Leon Levine and Christa Overcash.

In addition, with Michael's passion, many fundraisers in our community have benefitted from his advice and encouragement.

AFP Charlotte thanks you for your years of service.

Legislative Update

From Jason Lee, General Counsel, AFP International
(Summarized by Rex Otey)

Republicans named Rep. Paul Ryan, new Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. There are reports that Sen. McConnell (the 2015 Senate Majority Leader) and other Republican leaders are making the tax extenders package a priority before the end of the year. That is good news in terms of the potential reinstatement of the IRA Rollover provision. The Republicans have indicated that they still want to make some provisions permanent. Whether those will include the IRA Rollover remains to be seen. We'll continue to make a push on the Hill re: the latter.
Intel suggests that many charitable provisions have bipartisan support and that the charitable deduction is held in higher regard than other deductions (e.g., state and local taxes).
Please continue reaching out to our Representatives.
