President's Letter

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the holiday season and have had a great start to 2019.

We are looking forward to another exciting year with AFP Charlotte. We already have some great programming planned and hope to see many of our members at upcoming meetings. I encourage everyone to get involved with our Chapter this year by attending more meetings, visiting an affinity group, applying for a scholarship, or another activity that fits your needs. Consider joining a Chapter committee as well; we always need dedicated volunteers, especially with events like the NC Philanthropy Conference and National Philanthropy Day.

If you're not a member yet, 2019 could be your year to join! Our members receive reduced rates to program offerings such as monthly luncheons, NC Philanthropy Conference, AFP trainings in addition to building a network of peers, ability to attend affinity groups, conference scholarship opportunities, and access to a vast collection of educational materials and best practices through AFP Global.

Here's to a great year of philanthropy and professional development!

Mike Blackwelder, MBA, CFRE

Put Your Mask on First: Ikigai and Your Career
Monday, February 4, 2019
11:30 am - 1:00 pm | CPCC Harris Campus

Speaker: Alice L. Ferris, MBA, ACFRE Partner, GoalBusters LLC
Do you love your work? Are you great at being a fundraiser? But do you have a sense that you could be a little bit more content with how it all fits together? In Japanese culture, there is a concept called ikigai, loosely translated to "your life's purpose." While there are a lot of discussions about finding your why and your passion, it's not just about that. Whether you'd like to work on your own sense of personal leadership, or help coach someone else, this session will provide insight on the elements of ikigai, the ways to evaluate where you stand on each of the spheres of life, and tools to improve how your passion, vocation, and mission intersect. Register here.
Building Trust to Skyrocket Results
Thursday, March 7, 2019
11:30 am - 1:00 pm | CPCC Harris Campus

Do you struggle to get client stories from your program staff? Are your board members reluctant to introduce you to others? Do you want to accelerate the speed of developing and retaining donor relationships? Tammy Zonker, the founder of Fundraising Transformed, will talk about the fundamental process of building trust and watching your relationships and fundraising results soar. Register here.
In 2018, AFP Charlotte awarded CFRE approved continuing education credits for our lunch programs. Credits attendees can use toward initial certification or renewal!  (AFP Charlotte is a CFRE Approved Provider.)

Mentoring Program

Interested in sharing your philanthropy knowledge with another AFP member? Interested in learning from an experienced AFP member?
Then look no further than the mentor/mentee program. As a mentor, you'll be able to use your experience to guide another AFP member and as a mentee, you'll have the opportunity to learn from someone who has expertise in many facets of development.

If you are willing to guide and coach another member or if you are new to fundraising and not sure where to turn, please contact Jane Weaver. If you would like to learn more about the program, you can also call Jane at 401-714-8182 or visit our website. Our committee is currently accepting applications from interested mentors and mentees.

Are you interested in expanding your network of non-profit peers? Are you looking for new ways to deepen your engagement with AFP Charlotte outside of our monthly programs? Are you interested in honing a plethora of skills ranging from event planning to sponsorship outreach? If so, then the National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Committee is interested in you!
AFP Charlotte's National Philanthropy Day luncheon is an annual, high-profile event celebrating the spirit of giving in our community and is attended by over 650 community and non-profit leaders. If you're interested in being a part of the NPD Committee, then please contact Brittany Jenkins to learn more about this important and highly-visible volunteer leadership opportunity.
